The flag of Kenya (Bendera ya Kenya) is a tricolour of black, red, and green with two white edges imposed with a red, white and black Maasai shield and two crossed spears. The flag is mainly based on that of Kenya African National Union and was officially adopted on 12 December 1963 upon Kenya's independence. During the transition toward independence, proposals were considered to adopt the KANU flag as the national flag. However, concerns regarding political neutrality led to the formation of a committee under Jomo Kenyatta to develop a compromise design that would represent the broader population rather than a single political organization. The final design was intended to represent unity and continuity while avoiding direct affiliation with any political party.
